Meet Thomas

I am Thomas Wright — a 25-year veteran of public safety and law enforcement, a husband, father, grandfather, and a man deeply committed to Faith, Family, and Country.

Born in 1972 in Denver, Colorado, I spent my early years growing up on a small farm outside of Timnath. That upbringing shaped my work ethic and instilled in me the values of responsibility, perseverance, and service. In 1982, my family moved to Missouri, where I later met my wife, Faith. We were married in 1993 after meeting at church, and together we raised three boys — Nathanael, Dakoda, and Dustin — building a life centered on faith, integrity, and community.

In 1994, I enlisted in the United States Army. I completed basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, advanced training at Ft. Jackson, and received my first permanent assignment with the 10th Mountain Military Police Unit at Ft. Drum, New York. From 1996–1997, I was deployed to Camp Red Cloud, South Korea. My time in the Army strengthened my discipline, leadership, and unwavering respect for the rule of law.

After completing my enlistment, I continued serving the public by managing a 911 Center in central Missouri and later becoming an EMT/Paramedic in the Springfield area. In 2001, I graduated from the Police Academy and began my law enforcement career as a Sheriff’s Deputy in Missouri. I served more than a decade there, including as a School Resource Officer, where I became a strong advocate for student safety. I testified before House and Senate hearings in support of what became the Amy Hestir Student Protection Act — strengthening protections for students across Missouri.

As a lifelong advocate for education and prevention, I became a DARE Instructor and Nationally Certified School Resource Officer, graduating at the top of my class and earning the DARE America Award as Top Student. I also serve as an educator and instructor for the nationally recognized Say It Straight Foundation communication program.

In 2013, I moved to Colorado and made Garfield County my home. Since coming to Colorado, I have served with the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, the Basalt Police Department, and I currently serve as a Detective with the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office.

Over the course of my career, I have served in numerous specialized and leadership roles, including Patrol Supervisor, Major Case Squad member, SWAT Team member, Field Training Officer, Hostage Negotiator, Crisis Intervention Instructor, Anti-Trafficking Instructor and Investigator. I have led or participated in investigations involving homicide, internet crimes against children, child exploitation, human trafficking, fraud, narcotics, domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent offenses.

In recent years, I have expanded my work in trauma-informed investigations and human trafficking enforcement. I currently serve as Board President of the Battlement to the Bells Anti-Trafficking Taskforce (BATT) and am a Colorado State Certified Instructor for Human Trafficking Investigations. My training also includes Incident Command Systems, juvenile justice, forensic interviewing of children, and advanced de-escalation techniques.

This depth of experience has given me a clear understanding of criminal tactics, investigative strategy, and the importance of proactive, community-centered policing grounded in accountability and professionalism.

Who Am I Behind the Badge?

My faith, my family, and my country are everything to me.

I have been married for more than 32 years. We are blessed with three sons and five grandchildren. Two of our sons and their families now call Garfield County home. We chose Garfield County because it represents the wholesome, community-centered life we wanted to continue living — and sharing with our grandchildren.

When I’m not serving in law enforcement, you’ll find me enjoying Colorado’s great outdoors — in the woods or on one of our many waterways.

I am also honored to volunteer as a Board Member for TreeTop Child Advocacy Center and as President of the Board for Battlement to the Bells Anti-Trafficking Taskforce.

As your next Sheriff of Garfield County, I will bring decades of proven leadership, unmatched training, and a steadfast commitment to integrity, accountability, and the safety of every resident. Together, we will ensure that our Sheriff’s Office remains a model of professionalism, compassion, and service.

The Right Experience. The Right Leadership. The Right Time.
